At Aashakiran IVF Pvt. Ltd., we believe that early awareness of genetic conditions can change lives. Among these, Sickle Cell Anemia is a serious inherited blood disorder that can affect both parents and unborn children. With increasing awareness and access to prenatal genetic screening, we aim to help families make informed decisions and receive timely care.
What is Sickle Cell Anemia?
Sickle Cell Anemia is a hereditary blood disorder where red blood cells become abnormally shaped like a sickle (crescent) rather than round. These misshaped cells can block blood flow, causing pain, organ damage, and long-term complications.
It is caused by a mutation in the gene that instructs the body to make hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
How is Sickle Cell Anemia Inherited?
This condition follows an autosomal recessive inheritance:
- If both parents are carriers (have the sickle cell trait), there is a 25% chance in every pregnancy that the child will inherit Sickle Cell Disease.
- If only one parent is a carrier, the child may inherit the trait, but not the full disease.
Why Early Detection Matters?
At Aashakiran IVF – North India’s most trusted IVF chain – we offer carrier screening and prenatal genetic testing to identify sickle cell risk in couples planning to conceive.
✅ Carrier Screening:
Simple blood test to check if one or both partners carry the gene mutation.
✅ Prenatal Testing:
- Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) (10–13 weeks)
- Amniocentesis (15–20 weeks)
These tests can diagnose if the fetus has sickle cell anemia or is a carrier.
Symptoms of Sickle Cell Anemia in Children
Symptoms often appear in infancy and can include:
- Frequent pain episodes (“sickle cell crises”)
- Fatigue or anemia
- Swelling in hands and feet
- Frequent infections
- Vision problems
- Delayed growth
